Volvo Saved My Life Club: Carmelo
As manager of a Volvo dealership, Carmelo Scalzo knew about Volvo safety, but it wasn’t until a disaster that he experienced it firsthand.

In November of 2007, I finished up work late one night. When I finally got to leave, I was really tired. I just put the cruise control on 70 mph and headed home. When I was about five minutes away, I had to take an exit ramp. I did, and in the process, I literally dozed off for a split second. The next thing I knew I woke up to an airbag going off. I had no idea what happened. There had been a semi truck pulled over to the side of the exit ramp with its lights off and I slammed right into the back of the truck at full speed! No breaking, nothing. The police thought I had to have been drinking. I wasn’t I was just way, way overtired. The truck driver ended up getting the ticket when it was all over. All I got was a nick on my hand from shattering glass where I was holding the steering wheel, so I didn’t even go to the hospital. I just walked away. On top of it all, I am a manager for a Volvo dealership in Oak Park, Illinois. Over the years, I’ve driven all kinds of cars. That night, I was driving an XC90 and I have been driving one since. Probably will for the rest of my life.
