Volvo introduced the next generation S60 at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Set to arrive in 2010, its refined look and enhanced coupe-inspired lines are only the beginning. This car takes sporty — and safety — to a whole new level.
"The all-new S60 will be one of the strongest players in a segment where the competition is razor-sharp," says Volvo Cars President and CEO Stephen Odell. "The sporty design gives visual promise of an enthusiastic drive and I can assure you here and now that the all-new S60 will live up to that promise," he continued. "The car's technology will also help you to be a better and safer driver."
Scandinavian influences abound in the concept car, for a dramatic presence. Sweeping, flowing lines and lightweight materials mirror "racetrack" design cues. "Dynamic and with considerable character, but without appearing aggressive," explains Steve Mattin, Volvo Cars Design Director. "A thrilling blend of drama and sensuality," he added.
An entirely new lateral shoulder line forms a gentle, double wave. The wheels and the tread of the low-profile tires have been specially designed. Even the unique rear doors are exceptional. With the push of a button, movement starts off in the usual way — until the forward section also swings out away from the car's body and the door glides parallel until it reaches the rear wheel.
"You could say that we are showing the road we would like to take in the future," says Mattin. Seats are crafted from soft Light Blond leather with contrasting stitching and attached to the centre console's lower section and inner sill, which means that they don't touch the floor. You'll find blond birch wood that echos the salt- and sun-bleached piers and driftwood of the Scandinavian coastline — and many other amazing details.
Function definitely equals form in the S60, as the driver's environment has been designed to provide convenient control — right down to the speedometer. Mattin explains, "Low numbers appear closest to the eye and the figures appear to be increasingly distant as you accelerate. The idea is that the speedometer should provide a visual reminder of the forward motion."
Volvo is introducing yet another breakthrough safety innovation in the S60. Among other things, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection can detect a person who steps into the path of the car — and full braking power is automatically activated if the driver does not respond to the danger.
"We are taking a giant step forward with a system that also boosts safety for unprotected road-users. To our knowledge, none of our competitors have made such progress in this area," explains Thomas Broberg, safety expert at Volvo Cars. Meaning the S60 is more history in the making.
